Abstract

In this paper I examine factors that are
transforming the current patterns of forced migration into illegal
migration movements towards and within Europe causing enormous human suffering of the people on
the move. I critically assess the EU framing of extraterritoriality, border crisis and securi
ty and their
role in producing the notion of a so called ‘refugee crisis’ in Europe. The entry point of my discussion
is an interrogation of the prevalent notion of security within which the current migration patterns to the
so
-
called Global North are fram
ed, resulting in further hardening of the external borders of ‘Fortress
Europe’. In doing so, I seek to reinstate the human security dimensions of this ‘crisis’ caused by the
ongoing processes of bordering and rebordering security. I argue that the concept
of human security has
to be at the centre of any discussions about security. To do so, it is critical to tackle the emerging global
social order characterised by unprecedented levels of inequality, causing global reproduction of
insecurity of peoples of t
he Global South as well as the Global North. This notion of security of peoples
cannot be pursued for one group at the expense of another. The concluding argument of this critical
analysis of the contemporary trends in framing migration in Europe, is that
there is an urgent need to
reconceptualise security and to link it to a model of mobility that recognises its global and systemic
character.
